San Francisco, California
My experience with Work and Travel in San Francisco was like stepping into an entirely different world—a place where dreams truly come to life. It was an extraordinary test of character, where every challenge is an opportunity for growth. Most importantly, it offered the priceless opportunity to discover oneself. The sheer potential you encounter when you come face to face with your true self is boundless. Walking on the iconic streets and visiting the legendary places featured in some of the greatest films is an indescribable thrill. But above all, the most significant aspect is the profound journey of self-discovery.
Why San Francisco?
I chose the area, specifically the city of San Francisco, based on the guidance provided by the agency. I’m glad I trusted their advice and their genuine intentions to ensure I had a rich experience and a deep dive into American culture. San Francisco, with its diversity and rich history, turned out to be the perfect place for that.
What sparked your interest about the US?
Even though it might sound strange, what excites me the most is that I am pursuing a dream of mine entirely on my own—to explore the world through my own eyes, independently, with the whole world ahead of me. Even though I was just a little girl from a small village in the Republic of Moldova, I managed to put the world at my feet by proving to myself that I could do it. With a lot of confidence and positive thinking, I turned what was once just an idea in my head into a reality.
What did you like most about the experience?
What I liked the most was how challenging it was. Yes, it’s the American Dream, everything that happens to you, but it was really tough. I cried many times because it was hard, but oh my God, how happy I became after I overcame it all. Realizing that every difficult moment transformed me into the strongest version of myself—I’d pay double and go through it all again just to become the person I am now, the result of those challenges. I definitely appreciated how hard it was, and often, if not always, what you fear the most shows you the path you need to take.
I think my secret was that I had no expectations. I embraced everything with open arms and stayed fully present in the moment. I allowed myself to be surprised, didn’t overanalyze, and simply followed my instincts. It felt like being in an endless movie where I was the main character, capable of anything.
What about memories?
The most unique memories are made through traveling. That’s the main goal, after all—you go to see the world, because you can work almost anywhere. So yes, traveling should be your top priority when you go to the States. When you return to your home country, you’ll regret the things you didn’t do, not the things you managed to accomplish. Time is limited, and it’s important to take it seriously while you’re there.
Work and Travel brought beautiful people into my life. Considering that I went alone, I knew it was inevitable that I would form connections there. The people I resonated with were the most precious gifts God blessed me with. It’s priceless to find people who reflect your own values and aspirations while staying authentic and true to your goals.
Do you plan on going back to San Francisco?
I’m not usually the type to return to places I’ve already been. San Francisco is a beautiful city, but our story has come to an end. I’d love to go back for a coffee with the friends I made there and to reminisce about the memories, to remember the younger me who grew in courage there. But the world is vast, and there are so many places on my checklist still waiting for me.
